Shelter Strong (vinyasa)

This class is taught by:

Rebekah Reum

As a freshman at Grand Valley State University, I was on a mission to find new experiences and so, one evening, I stumbled into my very first yoga class. I found the poses comical, couldn't understand why "the breath “was such a big deal, and thought I would die if I had to stay in down-dog for one more second. Interestingly enough, GVSU and I did not make it past the first year of our relationship, but yoga and I did. This has become a recurring theme in my life, no matter what I go through or how many things I pick up and put down, yoga remains constant. In 2015, I decided to take Yoga Teacher Training so that I could learn and grow more in the practice that I had come to adore, but never in a million years was I planning on putting that training to use in a professional setting. I have learned that life often has other plans than we do, so sure enough as I continued along my 12 weeks of Teacher Training I felt more and more convinced that I should be sharing my love of yoga- the breath that now guides my life, the poses that strengthen and stretch my body, and the sacred mat space that allows me to center myself- with others. My yoga journey continues to grow and challenge me daily, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to now guide others along parts of their yoga journey. I also believe that the community we cultivate at Yoga Shelter is just as important as the physical practice of yoga, so please don't hesitate to reach out, whether it's just to say "hello", offer feedback, or express a concern, I would love to connect with you :)

My practice began when I finally became willing to quit fighting life.

Way to long stuck inside the prison of my mind, I was looking outside for a quick fix, if I was smart enough I would figure it all out. Victory, just around the corner, was mine, or maybe it was the next corner....

The definition of insanity is madness. Keep chasing definitions and you will come up with words like foolish and absurd. And yeah that is my mind when caught up in my ego. Chasing. Anything and everything. Ludicrous.

Yoga hasn't magically changed me into perfect person, or given me the perfect life either. I am not enlightened, as those who know me well will attest. Yoga does give me the opportunity to practice reverence in the present moment. And in that moment, the opportunity to consciously make choices. Yoga does create health both physically and mentally.

The Shelter provides a safe place to practice checking inside in a world that is constantly pushing and pulling us outside. Yoga challenges us to use our body, to explore our mind's reactions to the sensations created. With a warm room, some great people and sweet tunes, it's a great workout. Life, and our edge are constantly changing. Yoga just is. Everyday we roll out our mat, We get to take action while we practice acceptance and kindness towards ourselves. Then maybe, on a good day, we can share that out in the world.

Whether I am in front of the room or have my mat rolled out next to you I look forward to sharing the practice with you.

Our signature hot vinyasa style, in a heated room. Have fun and empower yourself as you burn away the stress of the day. Prepare to sweat and increase both stamina and metabolism, as STRONG is a challenging, dynamic cardio-intensive practice at a faster pace. Sequences of continuous “flows” provide the opportunity to deepen breathing and detoxify body and mind as heat builds from within. Intelligent pose progression moves from basic to complex as we connect the movement to breath. Cues to maintain focus on alignment and sound structure to help work every muscle safely, increase flexibility and strength in the body. Students are led through a series of postures that “flow” together for a couple of rounds, then freedom is given to move and define your own pace, testing your own limits as you make your practice your own. Find your power, explore your edge and still have a little time to rest.
