For some of us, coming to the Yoga Shelter might mean that we are making sacrifices elsewhere in our lives to keep up our practice. For others, yoga might just be the sacrifice that is made. More often than not, it seems like we hear about the negative facts of life. Layoffs, cuts and ‘rocky economy’ have become words we hear so often that they come as no surprise. When I speak with students who I haven’t seen in a while, their number one reason for not coming is that they can’t afford it.
The idea behind the creation of the Yoga for Everyone fund is exactly what it sounds like: everyone who wants to have yoga in their life should be allowed that opportunity, no matter what their current status is in life. Sanga yoga is all about community!
The fund is available to those who express interest and need. Students must complete an application process and determination will be based on the information given and amount of funds available. It is a scholarship program meant to supplement memberships for individuals who cannot afford them on their own, and it is funded entirely on student and organization donations. In order for the fund to be successful we NEED YOUR HELP!
Tickets will go on sale starting Monday, April 23rd to kick-off fundraising for the Yoga for Everyone fund for a raffle to be held on Sunday, May 20th. There will be one raffle each at the Birmingham, Royal Oak and West Bloomfield studios where we will give away one 10-class pass and one 20-class pass. There will be donation drop-boxes available in studio and the opportunity to add a donation to your purchase at the front desk.
This raffle is just the beginning; the Yoga for Everyone fund is going to be so big we can’t contain it in just one event! Linda Marchione will be holding a workshop benefiting the fund this weekend and look for community donation classes to be taught by Yoga Shelter teachers coming soon!
The Yoga Shelter means something special to all of us, whether we practice once a month or seven times a week. Everyone deserves to share in our community. There is already something wonderful here- let’s share it and make it even bigger!
I invite you to buy a raffle ticket (or ten!) to contribute to the Yoga for Everyone fund. If you have any ideas you would like to share or have an organization that would like to sponsor an event here in the future please let me know. I look forward to seeing our community grow!
