Aerial Yoga – March 2013

Please join Kristy Deskovitz for the March 2013 Session of Aerial Yoga. Aerial Yoga is a beautiful and supportive way to practice Yoga! You will gain strength, poise, open your backbends and support your inversions. There is a maximum of 8 students per class. Please bring a yoga mat and towel, we provide the aerial hammocks!

Family Yoga – March 24, 2013

Family Program – Family Yoga

Join us in exploring stories of Hindu gods and goddesses during a family yoga workshop. Teachers from Yoga Shelter Midtown will lead us in a playful and educational practice for children ages 5-11(must participate with an adult). Families are welcome at this one-hour event designed to explore the mental and physical aspects of yoga positions depicted in ancient Indian art. Space is limited and is first-come, first serve. Participants please bring one yoga mat per person.

Break It Down Workshop – March 23, 2013

Am I doing it right? At the Shelter, there is no right or wrong way to do a pose, but there may be a trick or two for moving safely and in a way that makes sense for your body. This workshop will focus on breaking down the structure of poses in breath, movement and mindfulness. Learn to let go of perfection while building a solid foundation. This is an interactive workshop; we will not be flowing and moving for 2 hours. This workshop is for everyone, whether you have practiced for 10 years or 1 week!

Breathing Exercises May Help Relieve Asthma

Patients with asthma who are willing to undertake intensive training may find benefits of asthma-targeted practice with a trained yoga practitioner.

According to a recent report by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, breathing exercises are among the most popular alternative therapies for asthmatics and include  yoga breathing exercises.

The researchers found the most robust body of evidence supported hyperventilation-reduction breathing techniques, which achieved “medium to large improvements in asthma symptoms and reductions in reliever medication use of approximately 1.5 to 2.5 puffs per day.”

Researchers also found evidence for yoga exercises, which typically require deep breaths — usually through the nose — with extended exhalation and can relieve asthma. Most of the evidence came from studies in India, where yoga exercises are more intensive and frequent than in the United States.

The ancient art of yoga, a physical, spiritual and mental practice whose benefits have been promoted as improving relaxation, has found an unlikely home: prisons.

When many states have cut their wellness and education programs for inmates, citing cost and political pressure, some wardens looking for a low-cost, low-risk way for inmates to reflect on their crimes, improve their fitness and cope with the stress of overcrowded prison life are turning toward yoga.
